Welcome to the new format PNND Update. We plan to keep PNND members, friends and supporters updated on key parliamentary initiatives and actions through more regular updates, as well as through our website and Facebook pages.
We greet you from the PNND headquarters in Basel, Switzerland where last month we held a very successful forum on the OSCE, Cooperative Security and a Nuclear Weapon Free World.
Other recent parliamentary actions/events include a PNND/World Future Council event at the United Nations, a conference in the Czech Senate hosted by PNND Council member Alena Gajduskova, and a Norwegian parliament debate initiated by PNND Co-President Marit Nybakk.
We take this opportunity to alert you to two very significant upcoming dates for nuclear disarmament which parliaments and parliamentarians are encouraged to observe: the UN International Day Against Nuclear Tests on August 29 and the UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26.
UN Day Against Nuclear Tests, August 29The UN Day Against Nuclear Tests was established on the anniversary of the day in 1991 that Kazakhstan closed down the Soviet nuclear test site on their territory. At the PNND Assembly in Kazakhstan on August 29, 2012, the ATOM Project was launched to promote the end of all nuclear tests through the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the achievement of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
We invite you to commemorate the UN Day Against Nuclear Tests by:
“Today, the effects of nuclear weapons upon civilian populations, agriculture, livestock and ground-water supplies are better known and well documented. They have contributed significantly to our collective efforts towards achieving the prohibition and elimination of all nuclear weapons for all time.” — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Statement for the 2014 UN Day Against Nuclear Tests
UN Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, September 26
Established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the anniversary of the first ever UNGA High Level Meeting for Nuclear Disarmament, the aims of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons are to highlight the vision of a nuclear weapons free world and encourage world leaders to negotiate for nuclear disarmament.
The day is supported by UNFOLD ZERO and the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs. UNFOLD ZERO website will provide a platform for governments, parliaments and civil society to post announcements, photos and reports of actions and events to commemorate this day.
In March 2014, the Inter Parliamentary Union (comprising 164 member parliaments), adopted a resolution which, among other things, calls on parliaments and parliamentarians to commemorate the day.
We invite you to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons by:
