Dear friends,

PNND extends you a big thank you for your efforts in 2014 for nuclear disarmament, and a very warm greeting for 2015. We hope that you have had a relaxing break over the holiday period, and are re-invigorated and re-inspired for the new year.

2014 was an inspiring year for PNND with a range of initiatives and events at the United Nations and in parliaments and inter-parliamentary bodies in numerous countries including Austria, Bangladesh, Czech Republic, Denmark, the European Parliament, France, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. For more information see PNND Updates archive and PNND News.

Vienna Conference

Over 1000 delegates (government and non-governmental) met in Vienna Dec 8-9 to discuss the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. PNND was very active promoting the conference in capitals - including those from nuclear-armed States - organising a roundtable in the Austrian parliament, facilitating the participation of parliamentarians in the main conference, and participating in various other side events (see Vienna conference: legislators vital to nuclear disarmament). The Global Security Institute (PNND’s host organisation in the USA), used the occasion of the Vienna conference to announce a proposal to the United Nations to affirm the illegality of targeting populated areas with nuclear weapons.

PNND in 2015

Key events to put on your 2015 calendar:

—    Review Conference of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (27 April – 22 May). Review Conferences are held every 5 years. PNND will highlight key proposals to the 2015 conference. We will be active in capitals and at the conference itself. PNND will cooperate with the Abolition 2000 Global Mobilisation for the NPT and Global Wave 2015. (See Take the next step after Vienna – global mobilisation to abolish nuclear weapons).

—    International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (September 26). PNND will work again with UNFOLD ZERO to ensure a successful day.

—    PNND Assembly, Prague (October). We are planning our 2015 Assembly in Prague in conjunction with a conference hosted by the Czech Foreign Ministry, Prague Institute for International Affairs and the Charles University on the ‘Prague Agenda’ – implementation of the vision for a nuclear-weapon-free world put forward by President Obama in his April 2009 speech in Prague.

Yours in peace
