Dear friends,

The 2015 Review conference of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty opens at the United Nations in New York on April 27 and will run until May 22.

April 26–27, Global Wave and other actions

Civil society has come together in two key actions to push for a successful NPT conference, i.e. a conference that strengthens the non-proliferation regime and makes significant progress towards global nuclear disarmament:

—    Peace and Planet, an international conference and rally in New York on April 24-26. PNND is holding a workshop with Mayors for Peace at the conference entitled Civil society and Legislators Cooperating for Nuclear Abolition. PNND will also participate in the rally.

—    Global Wave 2015. This is a simple action being done by people around the world on April 26-27 (or earlier) to ‘wave goodbye to nuclear weapons’. It aims to engage civil society, policy makers and media globally to support a successful NPT Review Conference. We encourage PNND members to ‘Wave goodbye to nuclear weapons’ from in front of your parliaments or from your electorates (if your parliament is not in session). A preliminary ‘Wave’ was done at the Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly led by IPU President Saber Chowdhury (also a Co-President of PNND). Waves are already planned for the European Parliament, Canadian Parliament and Jordan Parliament. Please let us know if you can organise a simple ‘wave goodbye to nuclear weapons’ from your parliament or electorate.

NPT Review conference

PNND is attending and monitoring the four weeks of the 2015 NPT Review Conference in New York. PNND will also be co-sponsoring a number of side events on nuclear disarmament initiatives including the proposal for a North East Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone, United Nations approaches to nuclear abolition (with UNFOLD ZERO), Legislators cooperating with Religious Communities (with Religions for Peace), Parliamentary Actions for Nuclear Disarmament (with the Inter Parliamentary Union) and Security without Nuclear Weapons: The Role of Umbrella States (with PragueVision Institute). Click here for a list of all side events

Please let us know if you, or any of your parliamentary colleagues, are participating in the NPT Review Conference so that we can ensure you/they receive invitations to these events.

Yours sincerely
